Let’s talk about web traffic, or the methods we use to get our website to be visited -and therefore known- before thinking it’s profitable.
While we might think there are methods that require a much greater number of visits to generate income, such as Google Adsense, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that, in fact, every type of business needs traffic if you want to make money online.
It seems easy to understand. However, you can waste a lot of time with your first venture if you focus too much on quality, the sales pitch, support, and other aspects, while neglecting traffic. It has its advantages, but it must be combined with other techniques to generate sales almost instantly.

Having said this, there are two ways to get your website to be known: With organic traffic and paid traffic.
Organic traffic is based on SEO and positioning.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s all about “optimizing” the content (the articles), keywords, links, and so on, so that search engines such as Google can index a site faster in their search results and position it as close as possible to the top of said results.
Beyond the criteria used by Google to index sites (it does it through robots that “read” certain aspects of the website), it is is very difficult to be positioned at the top, in the case of very competitive markets or niches. You want your site to be on top when someone searches for the expression “how to lose weight”, for instance. The age and quality of the content are influential factors, although no one really knows what parameters does Google use to decide which is the most relevant site.
It is also true that sometimes, in some niches, there are first or second web sites that have no content, blank or plainly bad pages, probably abandoned tests that still occupy the place that they had once won.
And even if you have the best product, it is very difficult to succeed if you have many competitors and not enough visitors.
So here comes the second option: paid traffic.
When you’re just getting started, you may be little afraid to invest in advertising, because paid traffic is basically advertising. You may not a Google AdWords account, or the knowledge about how to write ads, how to set up the different options, the keywords, and so on.
When it comes to internet marketing, every little issue contains a lot of information, and the proper handling of AdWords, for instance, has led to the creation of courses of all kinds, seeking to maximize the PPC (pay-per-click), and so on.
Then the person creates a website or blog with a product (their own or a third party’s) and leave it there waiting for visits and sales… maybe writing some articles, or uploading a few videos to YouTube, but then the process slows down and often no money is earned or no direct sales are made.

However, on Facebook, you can tell if it’s a woman, if she’s married, if she has children, if she has already clicked on a page related to that diet, whether she’s employed or not, and so on.
The segmentation offered by Facebook is much higher, and it lets you search for the market first, and then the product.

Choose your traffic sources wisely
You must be as careful as possible when generating sources of traffic to your website or blog. To have a profitable online business you must have a loyal audience that listens carefully to what you have to say, and for that you have to know well where do they come from. Sites like reddit will only increase your visit counters, without helping you obtain any particular result.
If you are looking to build a strong brand, you will have to seek to connect slowly with your visitors. To do that, there are some things you can try:
- Search for sites with a related content, and connect with the people who frequent those places.
- Strike up a conversation with your visitors, and see what interests them.
- Find references in your sector and follow them carefully to know what kind of contents are they publishing.
