Building your own website is a great achievement, no matter how you started it or created it — bringing your content to the world takes courage. But if you want someone to find your website, you need more than that. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is here to make sure your website gets to the top of Google search results and it stays there.

1. Establish a keyword niche for your business

One of the most important things in building a successful SEO strategy is an understanding of the size of your business, your customer base and your chances for success.

A ranking for a term with a higher search volume than for a term with a low search volume does not necessarily mean that your website is seen more often. This is because terms with a low search volume often get top rankings more easily. A ranking on the first page of a search engine for a less popular term can generate more website traffic than a poor ranking for a term with a higher search volume: 92% of the traffic goes to the websites on the first page in Google search results.

Therefore, search not only for the keywords with the highest volume, but also for keywords with an acceptable volume, but less competition. Searching for keywords with low search volume can also be a good way to focus your target audience.

2. Find more longtail keywords

The great thing about SEO and keyword targeting is that you can add more and more pages and content to your website to get more visitors. Once you have found some good keywords for which you have a good rank, you may find it hard to come up with completely new terms. You can try to make small changes to the keywords for which you also try to get a better rank.

Google is very specific, so a top ranking for “coffee stores in London” is not the same as a top ranking for “coffee stores near London Bridge”. A coffee store in London that tries to do just that could have two separate pages, so that both keywords get a good ranking. This information must not only refer to the location — you can also add adjectives like cheap, high quality, organic, homemade, etc. If you add these additional descriptions to your keyword, you will get longtail keywords and a whole range of new possibilities.

3. Improve your loading times and user experience (UX)

A badly designed website or slow loading times can fend off any potential customers. Visitors must be able to find everything they are looking for on a website in 2 seconds. Improving the user experience (UX) of a visitor to your website will undoubtedly increase your sales as well as improve your ranking.

This is because poor loading speeds and UX also have a direct impact on the ranking of your website: Every time a visitor comes to your site and clicks away immediately, it will damage your bounce rate, which is a ranking factor. The loading speed of the page is also a ranking factor.

4. Focus on Mobile

Earlier this year, Google announced that it would evaluate all websites based on the mobile view. This means that a website that is displayed incorrectly or slowly on smartphones may no longer get any ranking at all on Google. That’s why it’s crucial to invest your time and make sure your site creates a good user experience for smartphone users.

5. Invest time in good content

Getting customers to our website is only half the battle, keeping them there and inspiring them is the next part. If you can’t decide whether your idea is good or sufficient, ask yourself these four questions:

  • Will my idea produce original and interesting content?
  • Can it be linked to the services and products I offer?
  • Will it create enough opportunities to weave in the desired keywords?
  • Does it have a reasonable search volume?

It’s not just about ranking: The longer a user stays on your website, the greater the chance that he or she will make a purchase. Regularly publishing high quality content also brings you more regular customers.
